In the context of the young person moving from primary to secondary school he or she is not only moving place, going from primary to secondary school, but is also moving from a stage of childhood to adolescence. He or she is passing through puberty and is undergoing major emotional and physical changes.
In order to succeed the young person needs to be able to cope with these changes. Adolescence, for most teenagers is a time of turbulence, but even more so for a young person with additional difficulties as he or she is trying to cope with physical and psychological changes alongside difficulties that already exist in his or her life.
Some young people may leave primary school without the foundation skills in place and may be poorer than peers in areas such as reading, writing, and participating in PE or games. This may result in them arriving at the new school at a disadvantage even before they have settled into their new surroundings.
